BAS World: A small grid connection for a Major International Company

ABOUT THE CUSTOMER

BAS World is Europe’s largest trading platform for commercial vehicles—trucks, vans, trailers, machinery, and agricultural vehicles. The Brabant-based family business, founded in 1962 as Brabant Automobile Service, recently traded over 10,000 vehicles per year and generates approximately 80% of its revenue abroad. At the main site in Veghel, right next to the A50, there are more than 3,000 vehicles and machines in stock.

The BAS site houses several business units: BAS World (online trading platform), BAS Vans, BAS Carrosserie, BAS Truck Center (workshop), and its own hotel for international customers. Each division has its own energy profile; together, they make the Veghel site an energetically complex environment.

The challenge

Grid congestion in a busy industrial park: multiple energy-intensive business processes connected to a single power supply, each with its own priorities and time windows.

The BAS site in Veghel combines business processes that each have their own energy demands—and that cannot all run at full capacity simultaneously within the available grid connection:

  • Truck & Trailer Repair Shop: High Peak Workload, Mission-Critical
  • Preparing vans and commercial vehicles for the road: daily, volume-based
  • EV charging for customers and employees: unpredictable, customer-focused
  • Hotel & reception of international guests: 24/7 staffing, comfort is a top priority

The challenge was not only technical but also organizational: which process takes priority at any given time, and how do you prevent EV charging from limiting workshop capacity, or a surge in demand from the body shop from plunging the hotel into darkness?

The solution

Covolt provides a fully integrated energy package for BAS locations, with power management at its core:

Power Management / EMS (Covolt Horizon):

  • Real-time management of all assets on-site
  • Prioritization by business process: workshop, loading, hotel
  • Dynamic limit per connection per location
  • Automatic control of charging stations based on available grid capacity

Self-Consumption Optimization (EOS):

  • Optimization of PV yield across all locations
  • Insight into consumption patterns by business unit
  • Facility Management Reporting

Aggregator/Flex Trading:

  • Report PV generation to the grid operator
  • Market optimization of available flexible capacity

Asset Monitoring:

  • Technical Management of PV Systems
  • Preventive & Corrective Maintenance
result

Thanks to Covolt’s power management system, all business processes at the BAS site in Veghel run on a single controlled grid connection, without conflicts between processes and without exceeding grid capacity. The Covolt Horizon EMS knows the location and priority of every asset: the workshop always has capacity, the hotel never faces shortages, and charging stations charge when there is available capacity.
