What is Power Control? +
Power Control is Covolt’s smart power management system that helps you optimize the use of your own solar energy. The system automatically manages your battery so that you can use as much of the electricity you generate yourself as possible.
Who is Power Control suitable for? +
For businesses with solar panels and a battery, that have significant energy needs and regularly generate a surplus. Typically: high PV output in the summer, but continuous consumption even in the evenings and during the winter.
When is Power Control not suitable? +
If you have very little surplus energy (little PV), very little energy demand, or no battery, then there isn't much to optimize.
What is the purpose of self-consumption optimization? +
Use as much of the electricity you generate yourself as possible. This reduces your dependence on the grid, saves you on transmission costs, and allows you to get the most out of your own green energy.
How can I save money with Power Control? +
In three areas: (1) Transmission costs — reduced grid draw. (2) Energy taxes & surcharges/rebates — when battery storage, solar power, and consumption are included in the same contract. (3) kWmax costs — peak shaving reduces your monthly peak.
How much can I save? +
That depends on your energy usage profile, solar panel system, battery capacity, and contract type. Our experts will calculate a business case tailored to your situation.
What is peak shaving? +
A portion of your battery capacity is reserved for peak periods. As soon as your consumption threatens to exceed your contracted capacity, the battery automatically discharges to smooth out the peak.
Why is peak shaving important? +
Exceeding your connection capacity can result in hefty fines from your grid operator. Peak shaving helps you avoid this and keeps your grid costs predictable.
Is peak shaving always available? +
Yes, peak shaving is available as a standard add-on with Power Control, regardless of which strategy you choose.
What is Flex Trading, and how does it relate to Power Control? +
Flex Trading is an optional add-on to Power Control that allows you to generate additional revenue by trading on the energy market, in addition to optimizing your self-consumption. Not required—Power Control works just fine without it.
What is the difference between Flex Trading Basic and Pro? +
Basic monitors day-ahead quarter-hourly prices (EPEX) and charges when electricity is cheap—requires a PAP contract with purchased imbalance risk. Pro adjusts in real time based on imbalance prices and offers the highest potential return, but requires an imbalance contract.
Do I need Flex Trading? +
Not necessarily. The core of Power Control is optimizing self-consumption. Flex Trading is a good option if, in addition to saving money, you also want to actively earn income on the energy market and have flexible capacity available for that purpose.
What is the Covolt Horizon Control Box? +
The Control Box is the physical link between your system and the Covolt cloud. It collects real-time data from your inverters, battery, and meter, and executes control commands. Comes with a 4G data plan.
What equipment can Covolt control? +
Solar PV systems, battery systems, and charging stations. The system is brand-independent and suitable for both new and existing installations.
Do I need a specific brand of battery? +
No, Covolt is brand-independent. We can control various types of batteries, as long as they are compatible with smart control systems.
What do PAP and SAP stand for? +
PAP (Profile Allocation Point) and SAP (Standard Allocation Point) are contract types offered by your energy supplier. Your choice determines the benefits you can achieve with Power Control.
Should my battery be set to PAP or SAP? +
SAP: suitable for a nomination contract without Flex Trading Pro, or if you want a separate contract. PAP: suitable if you want Flex Trading Pro, or if you want everything in a single contract.
How do I know if Power Control is right for me? +
Our experts will analyze your energy usage profile, existing system, and contract structure. Contact us for a no-obligation consultation.
How long does the installation take? +
Installing the Control Box usually takes half a day. This is followed by onboarding and activation, after which your system is immediately operational.
Can I combine Power Control with other Covolt services? +
Yes, Power Control is part of the Covolt Flexibility Stack. You can combine multiple services, such as congestion services (CBC, Redispatch) or balancing services (aFRR, FCR).
What is Flex Trading? +
Flex Trading involves trading flexible battery capacity on the energy markets. Covolt combines your battery with other assets in a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) and trades on your behalf to maximize returns.
What is a Virtual Power Plant (VPP)? +
A network of decentralized energy sources that are virtually aggregated and managed as a single entity. By pooling assets, Covolt offers larger volumes and better prices on the market.
Who is Flex Trading suitable for? +
For owners of battery systems—both standalone BESS and co-located assets that combine a battery with solar panels.
What is the difference between Flex Trading and Power Control? +
Power Control focuses on optimizing self-consumption. Flex Trading goes a step further by actively trading your flexible capacity on the energy markets. Flex Trading is also available as an optional add-on to Power Control.
Can I combine Flex Trading with self-consumption optimization? +
Yes. When market prices are moderate, the system automatically switches to self-consumption optimization. Active trading only occurs during significant price spikes or drops.
What are the four types of Flex Trading? +
(1) Basic — trading on day-ahead prices. (2) Pro — real-time imbalance trading + aFRR. (3) Local — congestion services for the grid operator. (4) Tolling — fixed income through capacity reservation for a third party.
Which option is right for me? +
Basic: Get started without real-time risk. Pro: Maximize returns; ready for real-time trading. Local: In congested areas. Tolling: Fixed, predictable income without market risk.
How does Flex Trading Basic work? +
Basic monitors EPEX day-ahead quarter-hourly prices. The system calculates an optimal charging and discharging schedule on a daily basis: charging when prices are low, discharging when prices are high.
What kind of contract do I need for Basic? +
A PAP contract with day-ahead bids and a purchased imbalance risk. Your energy supplier covers the imbalance risk for you.
What are the benefits of Flex Trading Basic? +
You take advantage of price differences in the day-ahead market without being exposed to real-time price fluctuations. Prices are known a day in advance—which provides predictability.
How does Flex Trading Pro work? +
Pro manages your battery in real time based on imbalance prices. Our algorithms run 24/7 and bid on your behalf in TenneT’s aFRR market.
What is aFRR? +
Automatic Frequency Restoration Reserve — a balancing service that TenneT uses to maintain the balance of the power grid. Participating batteries are paid to quickly supply or draw power.
What is the advantage of the multi-market strategy? +
By using aFRR in addition to imbalance trading, you are better protected against adverse market conditions. Under control state 2, aFRR providers are actually rewarded.
What is control state 2? +
A situation in which TenneT actively intervenes to maintain grid balance. Participants in the imbalance market may incur losses, while aFRR providers are rewarded.
What kind of contract do I need for Pro? +
An imbalance contract — you bear the imbalance risk yourself, but in return you have the highest potential return.
What is Flex Trading Local? +
Local focuses on services for the grid operator in the event of local congestion. Your battery helps relieve the strain on the grid when there is too much or too little power available in a particular area.
What are CBC and CSC? +
CBC (Capacity-Limiting Contracts): agreements to limit your capacity when necessary. CSC (Congestion Service Contracts): active participation during congestion. You receive compensation for both.
Is Flex Trading Local available everywhere? +
Local is particularly useful in congested areas. Availability depends on your location and the regional grid operator’s requirements.
What is Flex Trading Tolling? +
With Tolling, you reserve (part of) your battery capacity for a third party—the “toller,” usually a BRP or trading firm. In exchange, you receive a fixed income.
How does the tolling arrangement work? +
The toll operator pays a fixed fee for the reserved capacity and determines how it is allocated. Covolt handles the technical management. You receive a predictable income without having to worry about market prices.
What is the benefit of tolling? +
Guaranteed income with no market risk. The counterparty assumes the risk—ideal for parties who prioritize stability over variable returns.
Can I use my entire battery for tolling? +
That's possible, but you can also set aside a portion for tolling and use the rest for self-consumption optimization or other Flex Trading options.
How does Covolt manage my battery? +
Via the Covolt Horizon Control Box on-site. This communicates in real time with our cloud platform. Our algorithms determine the optimal strategy every 15 minutes.
How quickly does the system respond to price changes? +
With Flex Trading Pro, in seconds. The algorithms run 24/7 based on the latest market data and forecasts.
Can I switch between Flex Trading options? +
In principle, yes, but this may depend on the terms of your contract with your energy provider. Discuss the options with our experts.
How long will it take before I'm up and running? +
Once the Control Box is installed, your battery can usually be operational in our VPP within a few days. For aFRR, this takes longer—TenneT currently requires 6 to 8 weeks to qualify a battery.
